The Worst djs EVER!! (But on purpose?)

There is no Skull Kontrol night tonight. Instead:

Our fine friend Dimitri aka Big D aka DJ Cockerspaniel of Booty Bassment and the Basstanic blog has come up with another one of his hair brained schemes. If you're in the greater San Diego area you might want to hit this up. It's TONIGHT and it's free. The lamest, worstest, dumbest, cheesiest, wackest, gayest, crappiest horseshit EVER played in a club!! Go on his Basstanic blog to request your favorite dumb song! You can find his blog in our Blogroll to the right. I think I'm going to request that one Venga Boys song. Remember? "Pum bum bum bum bum PUNUM, the Venga Boys are coming, New York and San Francisco!" Something like that. Oh! And at the beginning it goes, "We like to party, we like to party." Anyways. Go to this shit.

Super cool and super dumb.

Man oh man last night was fun. What the hell? People will come out to hear rock steady, reggae and ska? How come when I have faith in people I'm wrong and then outta nowheres, when I have NO faith I'm surprised? So anyway. Last night was bonkers.

Side note. Skull Kontrol is NOT this Thursday. NOT. It's next Thursday the FOURTH. This Thursday me and all the dogs are going to Dimitri's stupid night at Zombie. He's playing the dumbest jams in history. Like super dumb shit. Go.

The best in 60s and 70s reggae, rock steady & ska

Good morning. Tonight I'm taking part in this thing with Jeff Graves and Richie Lauridsen (The Muslims). Reggae, rock steady and ska. 60s, 70s, rudeboy and skinhead. I am pretty excited, as this has been my shit lately. It's free. I and I say you should go.

And below, a video of one of my favorite 45s. Jackie Robinson's "Homely Girl".

Jeremy Jay plans new record release...Airwalker

November Sixth 2007 is the release date of the new Jeremy Jay record. "Airwalker" will be released on legendary underground label K Records. The title track and first single is amongst my current favorite songs. If you like Jonathon Richman then you'll love this. But that's not meant to mean it sounds just like JR, just if you get him, you'll get Jeremy Jay. More great, great shit from Los Angeles.

As Jeremy is an old friend of ours, we'll be setting up a record release party on November 8 including a live set by JJ and a soul dance party with records meticulously chosen by me and the rest of the Skullz. Venue's not chosen yet, but don't trip...it'll be a good one. Mark your calendars.

Check out Airwalker and 3 other songs on his Myspace profile.

What an awful event.

Why would anyone have even flirted with the idea of going to Street Scene? What an awful collection of "artists". I struggled to find a group on the list I care about. What a cheesy, corporate, awful event. Haha, Z-Trip? The "inventor of the mash up" (self proclaimed). What a joke. Of 71 "artists" on the line-up, I would probably watch one, maybe two per day. Bad Brains? Maybe, but most likely disappointing. Air? Fuck. Saw 'em once. They're alright. Good show I 'spos. Too Short? Sure. Just to giggle while "nigga niggs bitch bitch fuck" gets hollered through the PA. Gosh. What an awful event.

Skull switch leads to new flier/flyer.

So, I guess, the "line-up" for the October 4th Skull Kontrol night @ Live Wire changed. Brandon and Chuck switched it up on me. So I had to go back to my creative place and whip this thing up. I feel creatively drained. So much of my heart and soul goes in to these pieces. That's right, it's a piece. An Orduno piece.

Eastern Promises

God damn, this movie was good. I fucking love mob ass gangster shit. And the Russians are due. Didn't they kill Bill Cosby's kid? Director David Cronenberg rules evidently. Can you believe I've never seen Crash, Naked Lunch, The Dead Zone or History Of Violence? What the fuck? Ha. I DID see The Fly. And I love that movie. I'm renting two of those movies this Monday. A twofer if you will. Probably Crash and HOV. But anyway. Eastern Promises. Brutal. Buhhhh-RUTAL.

Friday, September 21, 2007

Flyer? Or flier?

If you haven't seen me around for a while, it's cuz I've been playing with my colors.

And NO, I'm not for hire. This is my ART man. My craft. I can't compromise the integrity of my art.

Riot Grrrl - Revolution: Girl Style Now!

I am looking forward to this book. Black Dog Publishing did a great job with the Rough Trade book, so I'm expecting the same quality. It comes out in October.

My favorite band from this movement, by the way, was Slant 6. The Dischord 7" in particular was best.

Skull Kontrol is this week. Another magical noisy party. Does anyone rrealize the magic? I couldn't imagine more fun. I really couldn't. It's my favorite of anything I've ever been involved in. A tiny room filled with sweaty fools surrounded by the best and loudest music. And sorry for "tooting my own horn" with the "best" music statement. But it's true. Sorry charlie.

Anyway, this week is going to be special fun. Back to school. Summer's over. Let's celebrate with the cutest lil' anarchy party around.

Quote of the day/week/year.

So yesterday I lugged my records to the park festival thing. I was supposed to play records between bands and stuff. Cool, cool. Anyway, I had to get together with the sound guy/ equipment guy to get stuff set up and choose where I wanted to be. This guy was kinda burly and a little intimidating. Whatever. He uses his muscles for a living, no big. I just wanted you, the reader, to get a visual. Soooo. While unloading the turntables, he asked me what was HANDS DOWN the quote of the day/week/year.

"Hey man, you want these tables set up 'battle style'?"

P.Y.T and Blue Monday

Look. I don't want this blog be some kind of negative platform for me and my friends, I mean it. I want to share all the stuff we are organizing, along with some of the stuff that we love. Music, mostly, but anything that floats our boat.

But sometimes I just can't help it. This is one of those times.

OK. Can I please not hear "P.Y.T." by Michael Jackson or "Blue Monday" by New Order at a bar EVER again? What the fuck. I was at this bar the other night, for some bullshit event I was invited to. Man, was it bullshit. But anyway, mixed into generic electro bullcrap came these two songs. To the dj's credit, the dad and mom type clientele ate it up. I seen this gal, on the dancefloor, that looked like my 8th grade teacher, Mrs. Scherer. But back to the songs. Am I that crazy? Am I really that picky? "Whoa, look at me with all the obscurities!" I'm SOOO underground? I don't think so.

To end on a positive note, there's a Lock Up marathon on MSNBC. I love incarceration.

Partytime...BIG Saturday.

Sooooooooooooooooooo. Tomorrow is a busy busy day. There's a party at Golden Hill park first of all. This event is being put together by our fine pals at the Cat Dirt blog and record label. Scott n Sophie. All kinds of bands, food, beer, grass, bathrooms and what not. It starts at noon and goes to 10:00 (?). The Atoms and The Prayers play late. From 5-10, though me, Chuck, Brandon, and Jack Adler are going to play records between bands. THEE Jack Adler. If you don't know who that is, never mind. No biggies. Should be fun.

Later on tomorrow, like ten-ish, there's a show at Tower Bar. The Vultures, The Viewmasters and Desert Diamonds (featuring Gabe from The Muslims). The Skullz are also branging their records. $5?

My favorite song right now: Turn To Stone by Electric Light Orchestra

What the hell?

So, I was introduced last night to WatchTvSitcoms.com. What the HELL? Current movies free? Great TV episodes free? DVDs free? I swear. I don't get it. There's a donation area that says what they need to raise (1200ish) a month to keep it running, and how much earned so far. Fuck it, I threw in a buck. A buck, cuz I'm watching Season 6B of Sopranos tonight. If I have time, I'm watching Sunshine, the new Danny Boyle movie that nobody wanted to check out on ye olde big screen. Oh Lord, please let this last...and if you check it out, throw in a shekel or two.

This is my shit right now: Studio One Rude Boy comp

I've waited a long time to write about this GOT damn record/set. Today, when I saw my pal Matty McLaughlin, and suggested it to him, I decided, "fuck it.". This 2xlp is SO good. Easily the best record I've bought this year. It consists of reggae, ska and rock steady from the Rude Boy era. The first two songs alone will knock your socks off. The fast rocking ska of Jackie Opel's "You're Too Bad", then the dubby rocker, "Murderer" by Johnny Osbourne...oh dear. Everytime I play songs from this collection at one of these lil' dj things, people freak out. This is the shit I like right now. Ummm, it comes with bad ass liner notes and all that shit. Available on cd also.

Here's the goddamn track listing:

1. Jackie Opel — You're Too Bad
2. Johnny Osbourne — Murderer
3. John Holt — Hooligan
4. Keith McCarthy — Everybody Rude Now
5. Owen Gray — Ballistic Affair
6. Roy Richards — Get Smart
7. Dillinger — Stop The War
8. Jim Brown — Love In The Dance
9. Desmond Baker And The Clarendonians — Rude Boy Gone A Jail
10. The Wailers — Good Good Rudie
11. Dennis Brown — Make It Easy On Yourself
12. Wailing Souls — Don't Fight It
13. Dub Specialist — Peace Theme
14. Mr Foundation — See Them A Come
15. Dudley Sibley — Run Boy Run
16. Dennis Brown — Johnny Too Bad
17. Bob Andy — Crime Don’t Pay
18. Soul Brothers — Mr Kiss A Bang Bang

Here's the website link. You can listen to every song on the comp!!

Young Marble Giants rerelease!!

Speaking of Rough Trade. What perfect timing? Tomorrow sees the release of Young Marble Giants' Colossal Youth album in deluxe form on Domino. The release, entititled "Colossal Youth And Collected Works" will be composed of THREE cds including the original album remastered, an ep, "Testcard", an early recording, and some tracks recorded for compilations and a Peel Sessions recording from 1980.

Domino has already wowed me with the brilliant Orange Juice collection, "Glasgow School", so I have all the faith that this 3 cd set is going to be great.

Art Fag update and shit: Rough Trade Records

One of my inspirations and influences in regards to my starting Art Fag Recordings was Rough Trade Records. Some of my favorite records were released on this label and the diversity is something I will always strive for. From Stiff Little Fingers to The Libertines, and Young Marble Giants, Raincoats and Television Personalities in between, there was a mix of music and bands unparalleled by any label before or since. Oh, yeah don't forget about those others...The Smiths and The Strokes. The Fall? You get the picture. Or do you?

That being said, I'm happy to give a little peek into Art Fag's plans. Set for a 2008 release date, Art Fag will be releasing a record in tribute to Rough Trade. Interpretations of Rough Trade songs by (so far) the likes of The Prayers, NO AGE, Mika Miko, Chromatics, Glass Candy, The Vultures, Kill Me Tomorrow and The Muslims. Look forward to many, many more bands to be added. I don't plan on talking about this too much in the next coming months, I just couldn't contain my excitement. So there's your sneak peek. Look forward to a great record.

Here's a funny little history of Rough Trade set to a song by Jeffrey Lewis:

ASR? Yuck!! But for a chance to see NO AGE? F it.

Oh man I fucking hate ASR. When it comes to our beloved city, it just turns going out into a piece of shit. I have avoided going to any related events for years now, but I will break this pattern tomorrow night. For NO AGE, and NO AGE only. NO AGE is playing at The Onyx Room for Vice Magazine's ASR party. Fuck it. I <3 NA. And Vice is cool, I guess. Believe you me, I won't be anywhere else related to this. You won't catch me or any of my dogs at...ah, who cares anyway.

And if you're not familiar with NO AGE, check our archive, cuz I posted a blog all about them with a video and links.

SOOOO. Here goes:

GO SEE NO AGE AT THE ONYX ROOM (omg) FOR THE VICE MAGAZINE PARTY. IKAH LOVE OF BOOTY BASSMENT WILL ALSO BE DOING HIS LIL' THANG. TOMORROW NIGHT, xo

This Is England

This Is England was finally released this week. I'd been waiting a long time for this movie and I was NOT disappointed.

The movie is set in 1983 England and follows a small gang of skinheads who have recently taken under their wing a 12 year old named Shaun, who is happy to belong and finally not be bullied in school. It's a very ugly time in England (war, Margaret Thatcher) and an ugly time in the leadership of this small "gang". Torn apart by racist/nationalist views and an integrated love for all skins, black or white, though the Pakistani culture is also a focus of hate. It captures the era perfectly.

The music is GREAT too. Toots & The Maytals, The Upsetters, UK Subs and tons more. The dialogue is sometimes very funny and sometimes very intense. I don't think this movie will be available in the US very long so hurry up!! Wow. This is a horrible "review". It's not really a review anyways. It's just how I started MY week. And my week started PERFECTLY.

Here's some stuff to check out and educate that ass on This Is England the movie:

BET satire controversy: Read A Book

I watch a TON of CNN. If I'm at the computer, I either have a record on or CNN on. Actually, more news than records. Sometimes my incessant watching of the news is rewarded with a really great tip on something. This is one of those occasions. BET created this video below as a satire and it has really pissed off black groups. It's an animated public service announcement type thing called Read A Book. It's in the vein of Schoolhouse Rock...but gone really bad. Gone crunk even. It really made me laugh. Enjoy this PLEASE. It will make your day.

Hilarious right? Your body needs water? HAHAHAHA

“When I got up, I realized, my God, I don’t have any pants.”

We've all had our moments with the sauce. I've had mine, God knows Mario's had his; but I think this might top 'em all.

Melodies.

Screw it, I think I'm going out topless tonight and with a new do. A bunch of grease in my hair and bringing all my "locks" forward.

Whatever.

Alright, alright, I know. A week between posts? Geez. Truth is folks, this isn't my life. I'm not a "blogger". God forbid. Get used to it. There won't be a million posts a week. Our little visitation numbers aren't going to skyrocket.

But. That being said, HI. I had a great birthday weekend. I don't want to talk about it. LA was great. Whatever. The week was boring (work) whatever. Last night? Snoooozer. Looking forward to tonight. Our first night djing and putting on a show at Pink Elephant. CHROMATICS (Portland) are playing. It's going to be bananas. Promise. Early birds are going to be thankful. If you're not an early bird look forward to a line.

See ya.
