Magic Bullets

Magic Bullets from San Francisco played in my city last night. It was great. If you have never heard them before try to imagine what it would sound like if a band was the offspring of Altered Images, Orange Juice and The Smiths. And when I say that, I don't mean they are not original and unique. I mean that they take those influences and make a magic end result. Not only do we here at SK Blog HQ use the word perfect a lot, we use magic a lot too.

Anyway chack their shit if they come to your city. They won't disapoint you. There were less than 20 fools there last night and they made the room electric anyway. The most enthusiastic and happy group of 18 I've seen in a while.

Record Shopping With Me

There's no reason why anyone would want to read this crap. So I'm warning you, if you don't want to read about my personal crap than maybe click away now. Because this is boring. SOOOO I had a ridiculous week buying records. It started off with my finding the Fang record, sure. Then I went crazy and bought all kinds more. Suicide's A Way Of Life (1988). Didn't expect this to be good. It is. It's not as good as the first two, but it's good. JJ Fad's Way Out 12". Party time bliss produced by Dr. Dre, Yella, Arabian Prince and Eazy-E. 'Nuff said. Slayer's Seasons In The Abyss. 1990 thrash magic. Nirvana's Sub Pop Sessions. Odd record on a label called Tupelo. It consists of different takes of songs from Bleach and singles of the Bleach era. The Fall's Hey Luciani! 12". One of my favorite bands during my favorite era. Beck's One Foot In The Grave. I am obsessed with K Records right now. This is on K and is recorded by K honcho/indie icon Calvin Johnson. Calvin Johnson sings on a song which I've posted below. It's good. And don't front on this shit. This ain't Midnite Vultures cheesy Beck bullshit. It's underground, lo-fi and very good. So that's that. Here's some of that shit.

Whorio Goes To Clown School

A total mystery. A big secret. Whorio Goes To Clown School. Brilliant punk magic. Listen to it. You'll never know who it is behind it. But get over it and love it even more hoser. (Actually it isn't that hard to figure out who it is.)

ATP 2008, Kill Me Tomorrow

So I'm sure everyone's heard about this year's All Tomorrow Parties right? The Nightmare Before Christmas? On December 5, 6, 7 & 8? Well it's being currated by Mike Patton and The Melvins. Fantomas, Big Business, The Melvins, The Locust, Neil Hamburger and Kill Me Tomorrow are playing so far. It's going to be held in Minefield, Somerset, United Kingdom.

Speaking of Kill Me Tomorrow, they played a dazzling show the other night in San Diego. These fools don't stop getting better and better. They are at work on a new lp as we speak. Look for their "lost" album to be released shortly. The vinyl lp will be released in Japan only and the cassette version in the U.S. only on my god damned record label, Art Fag.

Fang

Soooo, today I got Fang's first lp. Released in 1982 on Boner Records. Pretty happy about the whole situation. California hardcore doesn't get much better than this. Sam McBride was the master lyricist, with such poetic gems as, Destroy The Handicapped, or how he gets to fuck Brooke Shields on The Money Will Roll Right In. Charmer, this guy. But seriously this album is a 10 / 10, 5 stars and the oft used, PERFECT. Too bad Tom Flynn (guitar) quit shortly after and good ol' Sam McBride killed his boo and got a prison sentence. He's out now, only served 6 years. He changed his name to Sammytown upon his release. Er, nice choice....Sammytown. Check the songs below and then check the dang vid even more below.

The Money Will Roll Right In - Fang

Destroy The Handicapped - Fang

Here's a documentary on the youtubes about Sam "Sammytown" McBride. It's part 1, the links to the other 3 parts are in the info section of this video. If you gots 20 minutes, it's kinda worth the time to peep out this maniac.

Welcome To Sammytown Documentary

p.s. Can I mention that the gal who opens this doc is a moron?

Rubberband Man, Wild As The Taliban

Alright, alright. If you have never heard that damn T.I. song I referenced in the post below, well, you should. Shouldn't holmes put out more songs like this? I think this came out in 200.....4? Yeah yeah 2004. I remember getting the 12" and flipping out on it. Totally couldn't wait for another jam from this fool. STILL WAITING. Other than this song, homeboy SUCKS. Enjoy.

F'NMTV With NO AGE

So there's this new show on MTV apparently. It's hosted by Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz. (Too easy, let's not even go there.) So this show is supposed to be featuring all the "hot" new shit. It airs Fridays at 8 and this week our dear friends NO AGE will be on debuting their new video for "Eraser". Super cool/weird. Along with NO AGE premiering the vid and shooting the shit with Mr. Ashlee Simpson, that good lookin' gal Rhianna is going to be performing or some shit. And guess who else?? Maroon 5 is in the house. Welcome to bizarro world folks. For extra added bonus T.I. will be chit chatting too. Isn't he supposed to be in prison on weapons charges? Hey, does anyone remember the song, "Rubberband Man"? Man T.I. used to be tight. But I digress. Read more about this show belowwww.

San Diego, California

Dude check out the fresh flier below. Do you like The Fall? I REALLY like The Fall. So the other day, I was all, "Hey Chaz why not take the awesome artwork from The Fall's 1985 masterpiece, Our Nation's Saving Grace and use that as inspiration for a flier? Like how 'bout that badass Tower show we're doing?" And he was all, "Ok.".

Dang Man George Carlin Died

Dang man, George Carlin fuckin' died today. His heart or some shit. The author of the routine, "Rape CAN Be Funny" has left us. And 7 dirty words. Probably the smartest and most brilliant comics of all time. Isn't it funny when people call comedians "comics". I just had to drop that in there. Anyway, he's gone, so I suggest you watch an hour of his stuff on the youtubes. You won't be disapointed.

Here are some of George Carlin's jokes . Read.

Can vegetarians eat animal crackers?

Why do they put Braille on the drive-through bank machines?

How do they get the deer to cross at that yellow road sign?

Is it true that cannibals don’t eat clowns because they taste funny?

What was the best thing before sliced bread?

One nice thing about egotists: they don’t talk about other people.

Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery?

How is it possible to have a civil war?

If God dropped acid, would he see people?

If you ate pasta and antipasti, would you still be hungry?

If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

Whose cruel idea was it for the word “Lisp” to have a “S” in it?

Why are hemorrhoids called “hemorrhoids” instead of “assteroids”?

Why is the alphabet in that order? Is it because of that song?

If the “black box” flight recorder is never damaged during a plane crash, why isn’t the whole damn airplane made out of that shit?

I’m not into working out. My philosophy is no pain, no pain.

I’m desperately trying to figure out why Kamikaze pilots wore helmets.

Do illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup?

I’ve always wanted to be somebody, but I should have been more specific.

Ever notice when you blow in a dog’s face he gets mad at you, but when you take him in a car he sticks his head out the window?

Ever notice that anyone going slower than you is an idiot, but anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

You have to stay in shape. My mother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She’s 97 now and we have no idea where she is.

I have six locks on my door, all in a row. When I go out, I lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three of them.

One out of every three Americans is suffering from some form of mental illness. Think of two of your best friends. If they are OK, then it must be you.

Slant 6 / Quix*O*Tic / Casual Dots / Christina Billotte

Slant 6 - (l-r) Marge Marshall, Christina Billotte, Myra Power

I'm sure if you're a regular reader of this thing that you know that I'm a big fan of female fronted punk and post punk. From the roots that go back to the late 70s England through the early 90s explosion of Northwest / D.C. bands to the current breed of New Bloods, Mika Miko, Finally Punk and Yellow Fever. One of the best vocalist, guitarists and songwriters of this genre is Christina Bilotte. I have LOVED all of her bands. Slant 6 from the early 90s Dischord scene, and the later Quix*O*Tic and Casual Dots which were released on Kill Rock Stars. All three were top notch. Slant 6 being far more punk, had a lot of frenzied energy with melodies reminiscent of Wire. They released one of my favorite Dischord punk singles of the era, 1993s "What Kind Of Monster Are You" 7". The later bands, Quix*O*Tic and Casual Dots, were mellower but still had a punk spirit about them They were more on par, though, with the post punk sounds of The Raincoats. Very melodic weird and unique. There were no other bands like these in their given scenes. Unfortunately, like all the good stuff, they all broke up. Ah well...

DearBanana

What the hell? This girl, DearBanana has had me in a trance for an hour. These SONGS. Some are covers, I dont think they can all be. She is from China and I know not a thing more. I discovered her looking for "Here She Comes Now" by VU. She came up first and does a warped, no lyric version of it. That's all I needed. Her melodies remind me somewhat of Francoise Hardy's...but that's just me. I just got done watching at least 15 songs/vidz. Below are a few of my favorites. Her channel featuring 80 videos is at www.youtube.com/dearbanana, look them up.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE

Can you imagine being part of a scientific team in the 1940's and discovering time travel? Being the virtuous and bold person you are, you volunteer to take the maiden voyage to the 21st century! The plan is to go to the future, figure out what the biggest problems plaguing mankind are, and then go back to the '40's and work out fixing said problems before they start. Think of it; you, YOU, may be the one to prevent WWIII from ever happening. Perhaps you'll eradicate a pandemic before it starts? You set your dials for the next century and find yourself hurtling through time and space. Your machine stops with a shudder, and you get out, stepping into a world much different than your own. You make your way to a hotel, check into a room, turn on the TV and this is what you see:

Would you maybe just decide "fuck it" and go back to the 1940's?

Girls At Our Best

Girls At Our Best.

Years: 1979-ish - 1982

Personnel: Judy Evans, vocals / Carl Harper, drums / Gerard Swift, bass / james Alan , guitar

Hometown: Leeds

4 singles, one LP and a god damned Peel Session. Such a frickin' shame they were short lived but then I guess maybe it's a blessing there's anything at all. I got a song on a rare Rough Trade comp I bought a few months ago. When I heard their song "Politics", which was the first track, I almost dropped. Not really. What I really did was make a dumb ass grin. Like a grin signifying that I got away with something. The grin of receiving yet not deserving. I guess I get kinda weird about music, but they are THAT special. I immediately went into research mode, which I had hoped would then lead to purchase mode. Fuck. No such luck. This fantastic crap is so rare! No iTunes, no Cd's and no vinyl. Not even a lil' Youtube or some shit. The LP I saw on Gemm for 78 smackers. There was a reissue CD from 1994...from Japan...50 bucks on Amazon. But back to GAOB. This Judy Evans gal was so cool. Her voice was shrill but still, the melodies were top notch. And the dudes, the songwriters...pop gems. So check the shit out that I got laid out for you. There are a couple o more jams on their fake Myspace profile including the super "Politics" single I was gushing over a few words back. Enjoy, holmes.

One last thing. There is some chitter chat of a possible complete collection on the fantastic reissue label Cherry Red. SO if you like this, cross yo fingers.

YOUTH SUBCULTURE I NEVER KNEW ABOUT ALERT - SHARPIES

Why is it that whenever the good Dr. Dankenstein pays me a visit I always end up zoning out to youtube footage of skinheads, skinhead reggae and skinheads dancing? Well, on my latest excursion into the dregs of youtube, I happened upon footage of a subculture I never knew existed. In the early '70's the children of British immigrants to Australia took elements of mod and skinhead culture and made it look WAY more white-trash. Shaved heads with mullets, Fred Perry's with bell bottoms and platform shoes. Eh. Noish. Plus they listen to hard rock and stuff. Hahaha - weird. Anyways, check 'em. Sharpies. As in, "dressing sharp".

NEW(ISH) BAND ALERT - HORNET LEG

So last night Crocs opened up for New Bloods (who ruled). We knew they were on tour with a band called Hornet Leg, but being the stupid, lazy sack of dog-turds that I am, I didn't pre-show check them out. When they rolled into the Casbah, I was surprised to see Chris Sutton. Don't know who he is? He play(ed)s in a slew of Pacific Northwest bands, por ejemplo Dub Narcotic Soundsystem, C.O.C.O., etc. He's also now the Gossip's touring bassist. Anywhoooo, me and Chazzie have known him for a while through our old band playing some shows with C.O.C.O, though I hadn't seen him for a few years. I was stoked that he was at the show, but I was even more stoked to see that he was playing. Hornet Leg is his solo project that he's been doing for the last couple of years. When they hit the stage last night, I knew 10 seconds into it that it was going to be perfect. Minimal, stripped-down garage, without falling into the "minimal, stripped-down garage"-cliche. Mine ears heard hints of the Ramones, Vaselines and even weird bits of Spacemen 3 and stuff like that. Me thinks: PERFECT.

Moz & Marr

You've seen this, haven't you? Well, I haven't, and it's beautiful.

Outlaw By Chron Gen Was Kinda Boss

No story here ladies 'n' germs. I'm just in the mood for Chron Gen's Outlaw single. This is the seven inch version dubbed onto a bunch o' footage. It's not a proper video...but it's still cool. As were Chron Gen. CHRONIC GENERATION! Good ol' 1982...

This is Kind Of A Late Blog Post Thing.

AND it's local San Diego related, so all you devoted readers in Singapore i apologize in advance. And big ups to all my Kenyan peeps too, love ya. Anyway, tonight in my beloved San Diego, the fantastic New Bloods from PDX are playing. As stated on earlier blogs they are one of the best around and they are on influential and legendary label, Kill Rock Stars. Safe to say they seem to have been born to be on KRS. Also playing tonight are Crocodiles. Get ready for another melt down with these bonafide weirdos. The excitement is building. Rounding out the ol' shindig is Portland's Hornet Leg (K Records) and SD's Vaginals. So don't sleep on this Lord's Day/ Father's Day hoopla. Oh!! Also, the people responsible for this here blog will be playing records all nite looong.

All this shit takes place at the Casbah. See ya there holmes.

<3

Gosh, you know what I like? What I like is a good love song. One of these songs that really captures heart, and the way the heart speaks. A song that just engulfs you with love and tenderness. I like to hear the words of love translated through a sweet, sweet melody and gentle tones. Ladies and gentlemen, lovers all over this great earth...I give you "Gangsta Of Love" by urban romantics, The Geto Boys.

Band I Like Alert / Yellow Fever

On my recent trip up the coast with The Carrots, Fantastic magic and Crocodiles I had the luck to receive an e.p. by Carrot Jennifer's other band Yellow Fever. Holy shit. It is one of my favorite recordings I've heard this year. I'm pretty sure it's from 2007, but it's new to me. I listen to it EVERYDAY. (Sometimes twice.) Like I've mentioned before on posts, I'm not a good reviewer. I just cuss a little bit and let you hear for yourself. So have at it below. Marinate on that shit. Then go to their god damned Myspace profile and buy that shit.

The 60's Had Dylan, We Have Kelly.

Is this old? I'm way out of the loop on crap like this. Is it fair to call R. Kelly the voice of our generation?

I had the most vivid dream last night.

I dreamt 35 years into my future. Unfortunately, music had failed me, but I was able salvage a career in my second-choice profession, teaching college level history.

Video Rewind : Kill Surf City By JAMC

'Member this ol' thing? The Jesus & Mary Chain at their finest. So noisy and shrill yet completely melodic. Bands can only pray to achieve this greatness. The Beach Boys, Spector, and punk noise all baked into a nice shepard's pie.
