I haven't written anything on here in a while. So to get the ol' juices flowing I'm going to write a calendar of events. Here you go lil' doggies.
TUESDAY March 18.
OUT OF VOGUE @ Starlite. It's my new weekly night with Brandon Welchez. Every Tuesday night. This place is super cool, just in case you haven't been there. The music is pretty random, but here's some idea what you're in for. You can count on un poquito de french pop, 60s, 80s American indie underground, post punk, Creation Records, Rough Trade Records, C86 and more. It's free and the god damned kitchen stays open till 12. Alcohol and music goes till 2am.
THURSDAY March 20.
Skull Kontrol @ Live Wire. Blah Blah Blah. Our namesake club. Our favorite. Our most beloved. If you don't know, now you know. Out of step since 2006. Free. Fun. And always packed to the max. "Max cap" as we like to say in the business. DJs Mario Orduno and Sir Charles.
Tuesday March 25.
OUT OF VOGUE @ Starlite. See above for full story!!
Saturday March 29
NO KONTROL @ Whistle Stop. Punk / Dancing / Records / Fun. Kill Me Tomorrow LIVE!!, Mika Miko LIVE!! DJs Andrew Miller and Mario Orduno provide all the dancefloor anarchy. Come early!! $5.
That's it for now. That should wrap up March. Look forward to some fun crap in April including our bananas Skull Kontrol TWO Year Anniversary. See ya.

Skull Kontrol This Thursday And Cat Power "Jukebox" Listening Party

This Thursday @ Skull Kontrol we're having a listening party for the new Cat Power record, Jukebox. Jukebox will be played in it's entirety at 7pm with a "dollar off happy hour" (which takes place every M thru F @ Live Wire) and again at 9pm. We'll have cds to give away. Also we're going to have limited edition silver foil posters for ya. These posters are only going to be available on homegirl's upcoming tour and only a few were made up. Surely an ebay item in the making. What else we got....oh! just some stickers and postcards or whatever, courtesy of the fine folks at Matador Records.
After the album listening, count on having your ears all violated by the usual and unusual sounds of a Skull Kontrol club nite.

Jukebox tracklisting:
1. New York (Frank Sinatra)
2. Ramblin' (Wo)man (Hank Williams)
3. Metal Heart (Cat Power)
4. Silver Stallion (The Highwaymen)
5. Aretha, Sing One For Me (George Jackson)
6. Lost Someone (James Brown)
7. Lord, Help The Poor And Needy (Jessie Mae Hemphill)
8. I Believe In You (Bob Dylan)
9. Song To Bobby (Cat Power, written by Chan Marshall and Matt Sweeney)
10. Don't Explain (Billie Holiday)
11. Woman Left Lonely (Janis Joplin)
12. Blue (Joni Mitchell)
The names in parentheses are the best known performer of the song, not necessarily the songwriter. So don't get smart mouth with me.

Welcome Milkfat Films!!
Miklfat Films is officially launched this week. I've been waiting MONTHS for this. Milkfat is a collective of some very good friends of ours along with some strangers. A talented group of ladies and gentlemen of film, they are based in New York, Los Angeles and Malta. Along with film work and a newly launched blog, they will also be setting up events, including a launch party on December 14 in LA. Check their website for newly completed music videos and short films. Below are two newly released promos for the Skull Kontrol club in San Diego's Live Wire bar and The Muslims' "Extinction" single respectively. There's also a Prayers video coming soon, but is being held back for an exclusive release by the new and soon to be huge RCRD LBL website. Plan on tons of collaborations between the Mlkfat, Art Fag and Skull Kontrol families. So welcome Milkfat and stay tuned for their first event on December 14.

Skull Kontrol This Week

That's right peoples. Time to put your party hats on. This Thursday in beautiful sunny and (at times) chilly San Diego. Sure, sure, you can count on noisy ear hole cleaners, bassy butt rap, the sweetest in power pop, the obscurest of 45s, and more music you need in your life. You know what? I need to start posting set lists. That way you get what we're doing over here. It's very important, you know. Crucial. Ok, I'll think about it.

October 18, Skull replacement.
So The "Mighty" Prayers are going across the pond. Off to see The Queen for 2 weeks or so. Festivals, club gigs and what have you. They leave next week. Bon Voyage doggies.
Anyway. The important thing here is me. While they're gone I'll be doing the next Skull Kontrol on the 18th. Since I usually do these shits with Brandon Welchez and Sir Charles, I'll need a new partner. Cuz I'm lazy and I won't do it alone. SO. I've asked Big D aka Dimitri Dickensen aka DJ Cockerspaniel of Booty Bassment to join me. It's going to be bonkers. Maybe even bananas. Expect a brand new take on our anything goes Skull policy. Expect your ears to be even EXTRA cleaned out. God bless Skull Kontrol.
Skull Kontrol ALWAYS @ Live Wire.
Thursday October 18.
Always FREE.

San Francisco Day 1.
We left at 7:30 in the goddamn morning. Oddly enough, we left in an organized and timely fashion. Very rare. Me and Brandon picked up Dimitri (Booty Bassment) and we were off to pick up Andrew and then Megan in LA. We had a small group and a light load due to Brian (The Prayers' drummer) not being able to make the trip. Who cares about the drive, right? The only thing I'll add is that "Cowschwitz" fucking stinks in central California. Poor things. All cooped up.
The Knockout was the venue for the Friday show/club. I really like it there. It's a perfect size, small yet big enough. It also has a lot of character. I don't want to say dingy, because it sounds bad...but it's worn in you know? Also the staff there is really nice and generous. Free drinks all night and no questions or limits. Considering the price a bar pays for alcohol, isn't that the way it should be? I played records by myself for the first hour or so, and then The Vultures arrived. Totally late, mind you, due to a tire blowout. So it was a kind of a stressful vibe for a while. But they went on and they shredded. I know I've said this before, but they are getting better EVERY time they play. Since the crowd had very little knowledge of The Vultures, they were a bit stand offish, which I know bugs Chuck, but they did dig it and applauded loudly after each song. I think next time will be even better for them, now that the single is out and they've played up there.
After they played, I played more records while Ye Olde Prayers set up. They set up with a stand up drum set and each one of them played drums while the other two played guiter, bass and/or sang. I think it sounded great. Honestly, I think they should try this set up more often. It could use some more practice and maybe some changes but I loved it, and I think anybody who had seen them in the traditional set up liked it too. Considering the time they had to figure out what they would do without Brian, I commend them. (Look at my fuggin' dogs..all able and stuff.) The crowd were a little closer for The Prayers and they were recieved well. Really well. The only reasons I think the crowd got a little closer and offered a warmer reception were that they were drunker, and the place was filling and there was less room.
After The Prayers, Dimitri and Ryan (Booty Bassment) started their thing. The place was all full and shit and the dancefloor was packed. Dimitri and Ryan are amongst my favorite djs by the way. So good at what they do and far more original than the cookie cutter djs you find in most dance clubs. They played a ton of soul, oldies and hip hop. Rap and junk. I want to work with them in the future. Oh shit. BOOTY KONTROL @ THE CASBAH SAN DIEGO TOMORROW NIGHT WITH THE PRAYERS, ROMAN SPRING AND BOOTY/SKULL DJS. HA.
After the bar closed we hung out and drank and I got a chance to chat with the owner. I'm was real pleased with his appreciation of the night. He asked if we'd be interested in coming back in any capacity. So I think I'm going to try and set up a night once a month. I'm telling you, this place rules. They pay really well too. And give free drinks? Maybe I was in heaven and NOT The Knockout.
